Custom Cards

We don't support custom or homebrew cards, and we don't plan to.

Not a "can't be bothered". Here's the actual reasoning.

Why not#

Making a card for yourself is one thing. Us hosting it is another.

Design tools like mtg.design are something you point at yourself: you make a card, you download it, what happens next is yours. TableCommander would be storing that image, serving it to other players, and putting it in shared deck lists with our name on them. That makes us the publisher, not the tool. A "you're responsible for what you upload" line in our terms doesn't change that, because it isn't how hosting liability works.

That leads to three practical problems:

  • We can moderate for rude. We can't moderate for copyright. Nobody can look at an image and tell whether the uploader owns it. Pokémon art, anime stills, illustrations lifted from ArtStation: we'd be the ones hosting it.
  • It means a permanent legal process. Registered copyright agent, takedown route, repeat-infringer policy, someone on call to action notices. Ongoing overhead, not a weekend feature.
  • Ads pay the hosting bill. Ad networks have policies on user-generated and infringing content. Losing that doesn't cost a feature, it costs the site.

We're a very small team running this on ad revenue. Anything that adds permanent risk or permanent overhead has to clear a high bar, and this doesn't.

But other sites do it?#

  • Cockatrice. Software on your own machine. No host, no company, not comparable.
  • TappedOut. Alters (real cards, different art, artist must be credited), not custom cards.
  • Moxfield. Doesn't support it. Open request for years. The people asking keep flagging the moderation problem themselves.
  • Archidekt. Does, since late 2025. Also the best argument against it:
    • Refused for years, publicly citing no efficient way to monitor uploads and problematic art themes
    • Off by default, manual human moderation of every image
    • Custom cards don't affect the deck at all, not stats, not commanders
    • Their own team in 2026: usage has been very low, further investment isn't worth it
    • A bigger team built it, staffed moderation for it, hid it behind a toggle, and barely anyone uses it. We'd rather learn from that.

What you can do#

  • Think a card's missing? Send us some feedback or a bug in Discord, with the Scryfall link.
  • Want to design cards? mtg.design is excellent, show them off in Discord.

What we'd rather do#

  • Keep adding the formats you're actually asking for
  • Keep fixing bugs and shipping features
  • Keep building our great community
