Star Trek Commander precons and decklists.

Star Trek comes to Magic

Star Trek is the latest Universes Beyond set and it lands on November 13. Alongside the main set there are four Commander precons, each built around a different corner of the franchise: Picard and the Federation fleet, Spock and the original series crew, the Klingons and the Borg. Between the main set and the Commander decks that's over 640 cards, and they're all on TableCommander already.

Wizards put the full decklists up this week, so we built all four and made them public. You can copy any of them to your own decks and play them now, a couple of weeks before you can buy them.

Mechanics

Wizards covered the set's mechanics in their Star Trek mechanics article. The main ones:

  • Assimilate is a new keyword action. You put a card onto the battlefield under your control as a Borg artifact creature with a +1/+1 counter. The Borg Queen does it with creatures from an opponent's library.
  • Federation is a new ability word for abilities that care about the number of creature types among non-Borg creatures you control.
  • Strange new worlds is an ability word for abilities that count the number of differently named lands you control. Commander Spock has it.
  • Seek out is a new ability word, only in the Commander decks, for abilities that trigger whenever you draw your second card each turn. Picard has it.
  • Battlefront is an ability word, also only in the Commander decks, for abilities that care about the number of opponents you attacked this turn. Worf has it.

The main set also has Beam me up, a new keyword that lets you cast some instants and sorceries from your graveyard, face a dilemma, a new term for when you choose modes on a modal spell or ability, and returning Spacecraft with station.

The four decks

Each deck comes with two legends in the box, so we've listed the alternate commander too.

Federation Fleet

Led by Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary, with Captain Janeway, Endgame as the other option. White, blue and red.

This is the artifacts and legends deck. Picard draws you a card when another historic permanent costing 3 or more comes in, and the second card you draw each turn puts a counter on a creature and charges up one of your Spacecraft. If you liked the ships in Edge of Eternities this one will feel familiar.

Landing Party

Led by Commander Spock, with Captain Kirk, Boldly Going. Green, white and blue.

The lands deck, and the only one of the four with green in it. When Spock enters or attacks you reveal your top card, and if it costs less than or equal to the number of differently named lands you have, you cast it for free. If it's a land you can put it onto the battlefield tapped. Lots of ramp and lots of different lands, as you'd expect.

Klingon Fury

Led by Worf, Defiant Commander, with Kor, Cause of Vengeance. Red, white and black.

The attacking deck. Worf brings a 2/1 hasty Klingon Warrior with him, and whenever you attack you exile cards off the top that you can play, one for each opponent you attacked. So it pays to hit everyone at the table.

We Are the Borg

Led by The Borg Queen, with Locutus of Borg. White, blue and black.

The stealing deck. Your artifact creatures get +2/+2, and when the Queen enters or attacks, an opponent exiles cards from the top of their library until they hit a creature, and you assimilate it as a Borg. Probably the one your friends will like least.

Playing them here

Open any of the decklists above and copy it to your decks. From there you can take it into a table with friends or join an open Commander table. Tokens the deck makes are already attached, so they'll be ready to go in game.

Before release

Until the set is out, Scryfall has the new cards as not legal, so the deck page will say "not released yet" against them. That only matters at Strict tables. Any normal Commander table will let you in. It sorts itself out once they go legal on the 13th.

After release the official versions will also turn up in the Precons library, once MTGJSON has them.

Decklists are from Wizards of the Coast.
